September In-Season Produce

Fall is in the air! A new month means new in-season produce. Shopping for produce during its peak season not only ensures you’re eating the produce at its tastiest, but also at its cheapest. Here are some tasty finds for the month of September.

Starting off strong with an autumn classic— apples! Varieties like Honeycrisp, Gala, Granny Smith, and Golden Delicious are, well, delicious this time of year. Try out some homemade apple sauce or apple pie to satisfy your sweet tooth this month. Other fruits entering their peak season include persimmons, pears, and dates. Perhaps a persimmon salad, pear-almond cake, or stuffed dates can make their way onto your September menu!

As for vegetables, you can begin purchasing your pumpkins! While great for carving, you can begin testing pumpkin pie recipes for this holiday season. With pumpkins come winter squash— perfect for roasting and serving as a side dish. Edamame and sweet potatoes also are great seasonal picks for vegetable this month.

Lastly, add some nuts to your menu! Pecans and pistachios enter their season starting in September. Enjoy roasted, blended into butter, or mixed in to your favorite recipes! Pecan pie, homemade granola, and marshmallow-pecan sweet potato casserole are all delicious options.
