Virtual Fire Ecology Speaker Series

The Ventura County Resource Conservation District understands that wildfire is a constant threat for California.

To help residents prepare, the VCPBA hosts bi-monthly FREE Fire Ecology Speaker Series targeted to the community of Ventura County. This is an opportunity for the community to engage with fire ecology experts.

2026 Series

March 2026: Dynamics of a Fire Suppressed Forest in Southern California

Dr. Marko Spasojevic from the University of California, Riverside discussed his research on the mortality, recruitment, and growth of 16 species over 5 years in a montane hardwood-conifer forest.

2025 Series

December 2025: The Essence of Cultural Burning on Revitalization of Culture, Wildlife, & Landscape

Tribal Chair Ron W. Goode of the North Fork Mono Tribe discussed how the restoration of landscapes enhances resources, plant communities, wildlife, habitat, and restores water. Ron discussed how cultural fires help to reduce excess fuel and invasive or dominant vegetation as well as conifer encroachment, which then opens up the space on the landscape, allowing for sunshine and precipitation to create a regenerative regrowth.

Joelene Tamm with the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians & UC Riverside and Kim Corella with CALFIRE discussed the biology of GSOB, how to identify it, and how it’s devastating impact directly increases local wildfire risk.
