VCRCD was recently invited by Ascension Lutheran School in Thousand Oaks to come speak to several classes about monarch butterflies. Spreading our love for conservation with future environmental stewards is one of the highlights of our work at the VCRCD.

VCRCD was recently invited by Ascension Lutheran School in Thousand Oaks to come speak to several classes about monarch butterflies. Spreading our love for conservation with future environmental stewards is one of the highlights of our work at the VCRCD. Staff Members Rachel Ray and Heidi Ortloff were very impressed by the robust and thriving pollinator garden at the school. Speaking to students from grades K-8 was exciting and fun as each grade level brough their own experiences and curiosity to the presentation.

By the end of the day students were able to distinguish between male and female monarch butterflies, explain the importance of milkweed to monarch caterpillars, and list out actions they could take at home to help support pollinators in Ventura County. We were able to help students locate and identify several chrysalises in the pollinator garden which helped connect our monarch presentation to their school yard.
